THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PLAISANCE SECONDARY SCHOOL
On the 1st of June 1992, the school was officially inaugurated by the president of the republic of Seychelles, Mr. France Albert René. Present were all ministers, Archbishop Changhim, Father Rocca and the most distinguished guest.
At that time students came from four different schools, Plaisance, Mont Fleuri, Les Mamelles and La Misere. To date it caters for students from the district of Plaisance, Roche Caiman, Les mamelles and Cascade, principally students from Petit Paris from the latter.
Archbishop Changhim took the opportunity to talk as a parent and, followed by Mrs. Dora Ernesta the Head Teacher with a brief introduction before the President took the stand and conveyed the importance of education to the attentive audience.
Referring to the school’s motto “Striving for Excellence”, Mr. Rene said it was indeed an appropriate motto “which reflects our aspirations as a small but ambitious nation; determine to strive for the best of all our people”. In his address for the occasion, President Rene laid much emphasis on a newly introduced code of conduct for secondary schools, a code based on the idea and respect.
“Through this central value, the code encourages you to cultivate other important values such as diligence, self discipline, tolerance and cooperation” Mr. Rene told the students, adding they should do their best to live to the expectation of the code. He also urged all Parent-Teachers Associations (PTA’s) “to develop ways and means of bringing parents, the community and the school to work together for the good of our children”.
The President also thanked all who have contributed to the construction and setting up of the school: the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Laxmambhai and Company, The Civil Construction Company, Various Government ministries and departments and any other organization and individual who has, in one way or another played apart.
He was then invited to unveil the plaque to declare the school officially opened.
A student then presented a vote of thanks to the Seychelles government and the ministry of education for the completion of the school which will benefit all who use it.
